Ballet

In echo to the celebrations of the Franco-Russian Year, the Opera Garnier welcomes the Bolchoï Theatre Ballet for a double bill: Flammes de Paris, performed in 1932 and set in the French Revolution, and the famous Don Quichotte, created on the stage of the Bolchoï Theater in 1869. From May 5th to 15th.

Exhibitions

The Musée Marmottan Monet presents Complicity and Rupture, dedicated to Raoul and Jean Dufy. This is the first time that the two brothers’ pieces are put together. If Raoul’s work is very well known (fauvism and cubism), Jean’s remains less popular. The exhibition shows one hundred pieces and tries to underline what linked the brothers but also what distinguished them. Until June 26th.

Restaurants

Come and discover Speakeasy, a new lounge restaurant with a smoking room. The chef, who worked with the Pourcel brothers and Rostang, concocts : tuna toro in a soya sauce with yuzu, cod with pepper from Madagascar, Speakeasy tiger… Every evening, a singer on the piano plays a mix of jazz, blues and soul music from the 50’s and 60’s. Akrame Benallal, who has just been elected “Grand de demain” by the Gault & Millau guide, has opened his first restaurant Akrame (ex L’Etoile Lauriston and L’Orchidée). In a modern and uncluttered setting, with an open kitchen, you will really enjoy: egg cooked at 62°C on a potato and herring tartare, cod on black quinoa… Lunch menu at 35 Euro, about 45 / 65 Euro for dinner. 19 rue Lauriston, Paris 16th (+33 1 40 67 11 16). Ballet

From April 11th to 30th, the Opera Bastille will be the scene of the unfortunate love story Romeo and Juliet. Rudolf Noureev’s choreography manages to translate all the beauty of Prokofiev’s music and the passion of Shakespeare’s drama. Full of emotion.

Exhibitions

At the Musée Jacquemart André, « The Caillebotte brothers’ private world» invites us to enter the intimacy of an important Parisian family at the beginning of the XXth century, a period of major urban and technological transformations. Gustave’s paintings and Martial’s photographs reveal the underlying similarities between the two brothers as well as the way of life described by the Impressionists. Until July 11th.

The dazzling and disconcerting Dutch painter Kees Van Dongen is celebrated at Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris which offers us a look at his multifaceted personality: the socially-conscious man ever ready to caricature and denounce, the avant-garde artist and iconic Fauve, as well as one of the Roaring Twenties leading figures of the trendy Parisian scene. Until July 17th.

For the sake and Japanese tapas lovers, Isse has just opened Izakaya Isse, a kind of bistro devoted to the rice alcohol (50 different bottles). Pork from Pyrénées on a skewer and tempura vegetables, chicken wings in a sesame sauce, breaded breast of poultry, shizo leaf and runny French brie… Delicious meals to go with the famous drink. Opera

At the Opéra Garnier, from March 8th to April 5th, enjoy the masterpiece of Leos Janacek : « Kátia Kabanová ».  This opera created in 1921has been adapted by Janacek himself from Ostrovski‘s « The Storm ». Through the dramatic life of Kátia, it shows the female condition and the tragedy of oppressed women in rural Russia in the 1860s.

Exhibitions

The newly renovated Musée du Luxembourg reopens with a statement of its European dimension and an exhibition dedicated to one of the most important artists of Renaissance in the German World:  Lucas Cranach (1472-1553).  It displays the diversity and the fullness of the work of this artist who was a direct witness of major political and religious changes, especially the Reformation. Until May 23rd.

The Musée du Louvre has organized a cultural clash for you. During the first retrospective dedicated to the German sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736 – 1783), the museum presents five works by the English artist Tony Cragg (born in 1949). An unexpected art dialogue to witness before April 25th.

Kei: the Japanese chef Kei Kobayashi took over Gérard Besson’s restaurant at nr 5 rue Coq Héron, 1st, where he prepares a superb French cuisine with:  vegetable and salmon composition, duck risotto, lobster with condiments, boileau of mushrooms and its glass of Xeres, suckling lamb from the Pyrenees as well as a delicious vacherin with citrus fruits. What’s new this February ?

Exhibitions

Until May 29th at the Pinacothèque de Paris, do not miss the exhibition « Romanov : Tsars collectionneurs » displaying the private collections of the Romanov family, borrowed from the Ermitage in St-Petersburg. Acquired by the czars from Peter the Great to Nicholas the Conqueror, it is probably one of the world’s richest collections.

At the Musée Dapper, discover the exhibition  « Angola – Figures de pouvoir », with 140 pieces of art from Angola. It puts together masks, magical & religious objects, bas-reliefs, as well as the contemporary creations of the artist  António Ole. Until July 10th.

Dance

Go to the Palais Garnier for the ballet « Caligula » created in 2005 by Nicolas Le Riche. Its choreography, on Vivaldi’s « Four Seasons », was built like a tragedy and underlines the loneliness and complex personnality of the emperor, leading to his death. Until February 23rd.

Music

From February 7th to 19th, the Théâtre du Châtelet is part of the Festival de la Création musicale de Radio France and has programed the entire work of the Finnish major composer and director Esa-Pekka Salonen in 13 free concerts, among which two world creations.

A new restaurant & Shopping for spices

The French Chef Olivier Roellinger has just opened one of his famous spices warehouses at nr 51 bis, Rue Sainte-Anne, 2nd. It will be a true find for connoisseurs of peppers, vanilia and other spices. Closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Kura : Close to La Muette, a new Japanese restaurant has opened in a cute little place. It offers sashimi, sushi, as well as grilled fish…. Good genuine food to savour from Monday to Saturday at 56 Rue de Boulainvilliers, 16th. Tel : 01 45 20 18 32. Count 45 to 50 Euro.

Opera

The Opéra Comique starts the year with a bouffe-opera rarely programed : « Les Mamelles de Tirésias » by Francis Poulenc, based on Guillaume Apollinaire’s theatre play. Between satire of feminism and caustic social theme, this work is a masterpiece revealing Poulenc’s musical sophisticafion fully. From January 7th to 13th.

At the Palais Garnier, do not miss the fastuous  « Giulio Cesare » by Georg Friedrich Haendel. The settings have been imagined by Chantal Thomas and it will be Nathalie Dessay’s first Cleopatra, a must-see. From January 17th to February 7th.

Exhibitions

Until January 31st, the famous theatre, opera and movie director Patrice Chéreau has been given « carte blanche » at the Musée du Louvre. For his program entitled « Faces and bodies », he has mixed theatre, dance, reading, music and cinema. He has also asked the famous photographer Nan Goldin to put a diaporama together especially for the Louvre.

For the first time in France, the Musée d’art et d’histoire du judaïsme offers you a large retrospective dedicated to Felix Nussbaum (1904 – 1944),  a Modern German painter from the « New Objectivity » who died in Auschwitz. Taking his inspiration from Le Douanier Rousseau, Beckmann or Ensor among others, he painted the world brought to its own destruction by the will of man.Until January 23rd.

« Baba Bling » is the exhibition to see at the Musée du Quai Branly. It puts together 480 pieces of furniture, pearl-decorated fabrics, procelain… and symbolizes the integration between the Malay and Chinese merchants at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. It is a real example of intercultural tolerance that led to a population of mixed culture : the Peranakan. Until January 31st.

The English sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986) is celebrated at the Musée Rodin, with an exhibition putting together over 150 scluptures, two monumental pieces, 50 drawings as well as 3 albums of sketches. To discover before February 27th..

The former « Table de Joël Robuchon » becomes « les Tablettes de Jean-Louis Nomicos » who comes from « Lasserre » and « La Grand Cascade » and offers a very good revisited classic cuisine : soft-boiled egg with white truffle, macaronis stuffed with foie gras and truffle, rolled fillet of venison, crusty fillet of goatfish, chaud-froid with caramel… It is delicious, try it out ! Inaki Aizpitarte has opened a new restaurant next to le « Chateaubriand » : « Le Dauphin ». In an all-marble modern setting imagined by Rem Koolhaas himself, he offers Spanish-style « rationes » with : mallard terrine, croaker, ink risotto, chestnut velvety with foie gras… It’s the new trendy place to visit! Opera

Discover a traditional Czech opera folklore with «The Bartered Bride » created in Prague in 1866. This comic opera in 3 acts by Bedřich Smetana brought a major contribution to develop Czech music. Let yourself get carried away. At the Opéra Garnier, from December 4th to 27th, 2010.

Music-hall

My Fair Lady” did truly meet its public when first shown in 1956. The music by Frederick Loewe is full of emotion and fragility with a classical score, ballads and waltzes. Enjoy a pure moment of happiness. From December 9th, 2010 to January 2nd, 2011, at Théâtre du Chatelet.

Exhibitions

The Petit Palais offers the first retrospective of the Italian painter Giuseppe De Nittis (1846-1884), friend of Manet and Degas, largely forgotten during the last century. The exhibition highlights Impressionism in his outdoor scenes and revisited classicism, until January 16th, 2011.

The Centre Pompidou dedicates an exhibition to Arman, painter and sculptor of the postwar period and creator of the “Nouveau réalisme”. This exhibition of 120 masterpieces is a deep and original experience, until January 10th 2011.

Opera

Mozart’s most famous comic opera “Le Nozze di Figaro” is back at the Opera de Paris. Do not hesitate to enjoy Mozart’s masterpiece recreated in masterpiece recreated identically to the original by Giorgio Strehler, with settings by Ezio Frigerio. A brilliant classical to rediscover! At the Opéra Bastille, until June 7th, 2011.

Dance

The Théatre de Chaillot invites you to discover an amazing show in which the choreographer Mourad Merzouki took his inspiration in hip-hop and boxing.  In “Boxe Boxe”, he plays on the contrasts and similarities of both activities, accompanied by the music of the Quatuor Debussy. Until November 6th, 2010.

Exhibitions

Brooklyn’s “enfant terrible” Jean-Michel Basquiat is honored at the Musée d’Art moderne. His work presents a violent and fascinating anti-cultural art, full of bright colors. Until January 30th, 2011.

Also at the Musée d’Art Moderne, see the first retrospective in France of the photographer and filmmaker Larry Clark entitled “Kiss the past hello“. With over 200 pictures, most of them unpublished, the controversial exhibition (not suitable for minors) will take you to a brief journey into the lives of the American youth. Until January 2nd, 2011.

The Hungarian photographer André Kertész is the eldest among the great photographers such as Cartier Bresson, but he is far from being the most famous. Yet, he was the first to take into account the photographer’s point of view, as a factor as important as the camera itself. Until February 6 th, 2011, at Jeu de Paume.

Claude Monet opens the season at the Grand Palais. This is without a doubt one of the major exhibitions of the season and the most impressive of the famous impressionist’s retrospective since 30 years. 200 paintings have been put together, from his early wood and coast landscapes, to the famous “Water Lilies”.  Until January 24th.

If you are close to the Champs-Elysées, rediscover “Lasserre”, which new chef Christophe Moret prepares dishes in accordance to the superb decor: tasty scampi broth, Ginger-lime; truffled young pigeon, turnip perfumed with lapsang-souchong; roasted figs; Olive oil cream, lemon sorbet. New opening! “Les grandes Tables du 104” is a very modern huge loft  taken over by the chef Fabrice Biasiolo, newly arrived from Gascogne. The menu is very original: mussels salad with cabbage, breast of veal 24-hour cooked, vegetable wok, apple and pear caramel, creamy brioche… Delicious and affordable! Count around 50€. Event

La Galerie des enfants, located in the Grande Galerie de l’Evolution at the Jardin des Plantes, is a 5700 sqf wide exhibition space dedicated to increasing the awareness of the younger ones towards environmental issues, including the preservation of biodiversity. Grand Opening on October 6th.

Dance

The Théatre de Chaillot invites you to discover a new dance show choreographed by José Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu: “Lalala Gershwin”. It has been thought especially for the children to understand and takes us to a painful yet full of hope trip to a multiracial America. Until October 14th.

Exhibitions

Until January 24th, the Musée Jacquemart André presents « Rubens, Poussin et les peintres du XVIIe siècle ». A total of 60 master-pieces highlight the relations between the Flemish school directed by Rubens and the French School with at its head, Poussin, known for his “art savant”.

Design after World War 2. This is the theme of “Mobi Boom”, an exhibition focusing on this incredibly creative period that lead to new types of furniture, changes in lifestyle as well as new distribution networks. Not to be missed, until January 2nd, 2011, at the Arts Décoratifs.

For the first time in France, the Centre Georges Pompidou presents a major retrospective dedicated to the American artist Nancy Spero. The exhibition highlights a devoted artist, representing the Human in an exclusively female style. Until January 10th, 2011.

Back to Paris! What to see in September…

Event

Do not miss the international event “Biennale des Antiquaires” under the Nave of the Grand Palais. If you are looking for exceptional pieces, from archeology to modern paintings, you will find them here! From September 15th to 22nd.

Opera

The Opéra Bastille opens the season with Richard Wagner’s first “major” opera: “The Flying Dutchman”. In this version, James Morris will be the Flying Dutchman whereas Adrianne Pieczonka will be Senta, who sacrifices herself for the redemption of the damned captain. From September 9th.

At the Opéra Garnier, the season start will be joyful with Gioachino Rossini’s “L’Italiana in Algeri”, his first comical opera. Starting September 11th, follow the adventures of Isabella (here Vivia Genaux) who left for Algeria to free her lover.

Exhibitions

Until November 15th, the Musée Guimet features the exhibition “Rashid Rana – Perpétuel paradoxe”. It is the first time ever that the most renowned Pakistani contemporary artist is presented in France. His 20 installations are displayed among the permanent collection of millennial Asian artworks for a one-of-its-kind confrontation.

The Petit Palais opens its doors to photography to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Reporters sans Frontières”. 100 photographs by Pierre and Alexandra Boulat are displayed to underline the father and daughter’s common passion, from the slums in Nanterre in the 1950s to the women in Afghanistan or the children in Gaza.  Starting September 9th.

At the Pinacothèque de Paris, visit the exhibition “L’or des Incas. Origines et mystères”. While dominating the Andes for over a century, the Incas had a real fascination for gold that they considered to be the “sweat” of the sun. 253 artworks coming from the most prestigious Peruvian museums are reassembled. From September 10th.

The Maison Européenne de la Photographie introduces you to Karl Lagerfeld the photographer. The exhibition presents altogether personal and professional pictures as well as pictures for magazines and experimental photographs. An additional talent of the brilliant fashion designer of Chloe and then Chanel. From September 8th.

The “Spring”, the new address of the amazing and self-taught American chef Daniel Rose opens its doors. The restaurant is larger than the former one, it features a wine bar and “dinette”, and even a cellar for tasting. The menu sounds delicious: chicken broth and red mullet, Crab claw and buckwheat, rump of veal “à la Grenobloise” and ground almonds. Menus from 23 € to 64 €. 6 rue Bailleul, 1st. Stop at Moton Village, in the Fiat show-room to discover Nolita, the restaurant designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte and directed by the talented Italian chef Sébastien Mancuso. Dance

For the 6th edition, Les Etés de la danse de Paris will join the cross year between France and Russia. To highlight the connection between these two countries and in remembrance of Marius Petipa, the National Ballet of Novosibirsk has programmed an impressive show for its first time in Paris. At the Théâtre du Châtelet, from July 7th to 24th.

Exhibitions

For the very first time, Beat Takeshi Kitano accepted a museum’s invitation! For the exhibition « Gosse de peintre », the incredible filmmaker completely imagined an ensemble of paintings, movies, bizarre objects, unlikely machines. At the Fondation Cartier, from surprises to jokes, Kitano puts the visitor in the middle of his set. Until September 12th.

YSL Rétrospective” is the exhibition not to be missed at the Petit Palais. It presents 40 years of creation by Yves Saint Laurent. Discover the sources of inspiration of the genius who reinvented the female wardrobe and turned fashion into a celebration. Until August 29th.

The Musée du Quai Branly presents a major exhibition devoted to the artistic traditions of Central Africa in “Fleuve Congo”. Take a journey into the culture of the Bantu tribes along the majestic Congo River. A good opportunity to discover unexpected works! Until October 3rd.

Presented in the Centre Georges Pompidou’s Gallery, the exhibition “Dreamlands” deals with an interesting subject: how international fairs, universal expositions and theme parks have influenced the urban design. Until August 9th.

The “Musée de la Marine” pays a tribute to the maritime context during the Franco-Russian Alliance (1891-1914). A reminder of the diplomatic meetings, that were quite festive and for which the Tsars’ gifts were said to be inestimable. At the Palais de Chaillot, until October 3rd.

Music

What about listening to jazz music while enjoying fresh air? Go to the Parc Floral for the “Paris Jazz Festival” and discover musical improvisations, attend music workshops, or listen to concerts on the main stage. Saturdays and Sundays, until August 1st.

Reopening of the “Privilège”, the mythical restaurant of “Le Palace” Club!  Travel back to the 70’s and enjoy the menu: pea cappuccino, swordfish steak, risotto with spinach, raspberry and Hibiscus macaron… Great atmosphere and music to discover!
